Head of Engineering, Shopping & Rewards

"Check email only twice a day – Yes, a scary thought but this is something I did to improve my productivity (and sanity). I dedicated two 1-hour blocks every day to check and reply to emails. By the time I became a manager of managers at Amazon, I didn’t have much time left between the 1:1s and other essential meetings so blocking out 2 hours daily was crucial. Initially I worried about being away from such an important communication channel but I figured if there was something urgent one would call, IM or come by my office. In fact, that extra effort created a “is this important” filter so I would dedicate 100% of my attention to the matter. Eventually, email became an archival communication channel where it was used to share documents or communicate impactful decisions – basically serve as a record keeper."

Thread Strategies
Founder and CEO

"The company/organization you work for was there before you and it will be there after you. Remembering that you are part of a much bigger picture than your current day to day helps to encourage personal balance as well as think about what your particular lasting legacy will be for the (relatively) short time you are part of any given team/company/organization. Of course if you are part of a founding team maybe it wasn't there before you... but even as a founder of my business, I lean on this advice. Maybe my company wasn't there before me, but I certainly hope the business is still here once I move on to something else. And thinking about it as more than me, even as a founder, helps me make strategic decisions that will benefit the company beyond any one person being in any one role."

For that do a Monday Morning Or No Salary Test. On Monday Morning when you wake up do you feel excited to go to work? If I was paid no salary, would I still work on the same?"

"The best professional advice I’ve ever received came from a mentor who shared two related pieces of wisdom. The first was, “If you want their respect, you must first connect.” The second was, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” Both insights highlight the importance of establishing meaningful and trusting relationships, both in and outside of business. This guidance has become the cornerstone of my approach to life, leadership, and business."
